Penombre — Privacy Policy

Last updated: 8 August 2026

Penombre is an astronomy and photography planning app. It has no accounts, no advertising, no analytics and no tracking of any kind. This policy describes the only data the app touches and the only two services it ever contacts.

What the app collects

Nothing is collected by us. There is no server belonging to Penombre, no user account, and no identifier assigned to you or your device. We cannot see who uses the app, where you are, or what you look at.

Location

If you grant location permission, the app reads your device's location to compute Sun and Moon times, eclipse circumstances, twilight and the sky chart for where you are. You can instead pick a city or type coordinates by hand and never grant the permission at all — every feature except "use my current location" works that way.

Your location is used in three ways:

Who else receives data

Two third-party services, both contacted directly by the app, both only while you are using a feature that needs them. Each request carries your IP address, as any internet request does, and a user agent identifying Penombre and the developer's contact address.

Neither receives a name, an account, an advertising identifier, or anything else that identifies you personally. We have no agreement with either that gives us access to their logs.

What is stored, and where

Everything the app remembers is stored only on your device, in the app's private storage: your saved locations, your current location, your settings, and which reminders you enabled. None of it is backed up to us because there is nowhere to back it up to.

Uninstalling the app deletes all of it. Saved locations can also be removed individually from the Locations screen at any time.

Notifications

Reminders for sunrise, sunset, golden hour and dark skies are scheduled on your device by the device itself. There is no push service and no message is sent from anywhere else; if the app is not installed, nothing can arrive.

Permissions the app may request

Each can be refused, and each can be withdrawn later in your device settings.

Children

Penombre is not directed at children and collects no data from anyone, including children.

Changes

If this policy changes, the date at the top changes with it. Material changes will also be noted in the app's release notes.

Contact

Questions about this policy, or about the app: alfamizar@hotmail.com.

Penombre computes eclipse circumstances for planning and photography. Never look at the Sun through a camera, binoculars or a telescope without a purpose-made solar filter, and never use the app's timings as a substitute for proper eye protection.
